Kyoto City Tourism Association (KCTA), the Tourist office of the ancient Japanese capital, has launched the initiative Kyoto Tourism Navi, based on artificial intelligence, which predicts the level of tourist comfort of the entire city and proposes alternative routes with less density of visitors. The objective of this tool is to make visits more comfortable and pleasant by reorganizing the flow of people, which contributes to increasing the satisfaction of travelers and the inhabitants of this city.
Kyoto Tourism Navi is available on the official website of the Kyoto Tourism Office and is in the format of a calendar that anticipates, six months in advance, the level of comfort that visitors will find throughout the city.
The prediction is the result of crossing data, from the last three years, of variables such as the geolocation of mobile phones, the weather, the days of the week or the density of visits in certain urban points, which are obtained thanks to collaboration with private companies. Using artificial intelligence, the application can determine, with a high degree of accuracy, five levels of global congestion for all urban areas and tourist attractions in Kyoto.
The goal of KCTA is alleviate the congestion of the most touristic points of the city, to make the visit a more pleasant and orderly experience, thereby increasing the satisfaction of travelers and residents.
In addition, it allows the city's tourism authorities to decentralize and reorder tourist flows, discovering to travelers less-known but equally attractive places, spaces and monuments, since this tool also proposes nearby alternatives with less volume of visitors, such as Yamashina-ku, one of the eleven historical districts of Kyoto with its spectacular palaces and canals, or the majestic Ohara, where is the magic Sazen-In temple, with its impressive gardens and temples.
Deep learning and artificial intelligence to prevent overtourism
“KCTA is committed to preventing city congestion and to fight overtourism, to ensure that we continue to provide the best experience for the millions of visitors who choose Kyoto for their vacations every year, ”explains Takuya Horie, Planning and Marketing Specialist at KCTA.
Although Kyoto receives travelers constantly throughout the year, there are certain periods such as the cherry blossom (April-May), summer festivals (July) and autumn (September-October), in which the volume of travelers increases considerably; Therefore, the authorities hope that initiatives like these will contribute to the seasonal adjustment of the destination.
Kyoto Tourism Navi is being implemented in several phases. The first, launched in occasion of momiji (season of foliage change), includes specific data from the western Arashiyama area, one of the best known in the city for its famous bamboo forest.
The results of this stage will allow the tool to be adjusted to progressively expand it, so that specific predictions are offered for neighborhoods like Gion / Shimizu or Fushimi, very visited by travelers.
