The President of Greece, Prokopios Pavlopoulos, asked the British Museum “the return of the stolen Parthenon sculptures”During his speech at Tsinghua University (China), last week.
Pavlopoulos, in his speech at the headquarters of the Department of Classical and Modern Greek Studies of this university, made reference to the London museum's decision to retain the Greek sculptures.
The president noted that “we Greeks are proud of our culture. At the same time, however, we feel the weight and the debt of his protection, as well as the continuation of his mission.
Referring to the Acropolis and the Parthenon in Athens, stated that “Greek culture is the cradle of European civilization, but also of Western civilization, where the Parthenon played an emblematic role ”.
"That is why we are asking the return of the Parthenon sculptures to the British Museum ”, he added.
The president concluded by commenting that “as regards the worldwide cultural uniqueness of the Parthenon and its monuments, there is no need to provide any explanation; it is a self-evident truth ”.
