The Barapasaurus is known thanks to parts of more than 300 remains of at least six individual specimens found in Indiabut no skulls have yet been recovered.
However and despite this, Barapasaurus is the oldest known sauropod within the Vulcanodontidae family, one of the oldest sauropods found and, in turn, its skeleton is one of the most complete of a dinosaur from the Jurassic period.
It's known that the Barapasaurus gathered in herds like many sauropods, although it differed from other species by having comparatively slender legs.
Discovery of the Barapasaurus
All known fossils come from a single locality in the vicinity of the village of Pochampally, a mandal in the Nalgonda district, Telangana, in southern India, popularly known as the City of Silk, India.
The first bones were discovered in 1958, but most of the specimens were unearthed between 1960 and 1961.
In 1975, paleontologist Sohan Jain and his colleagues scientifically described the findings and in 2010, Bandyopadhyay and his colleagues published a more detailed osteological description of Barapasaurus.
